In-Studio Perspectives

JM2One of my customers loved the two peach cloches I recently created, but peach just isn’t her color. So we took the basic idea and tweaked it. She has been wanting a black cloche with a simple embellishment – something that can be worn every day that also has an understated elegance. We came up with this design – another vintage straw, hand sculpted into a shape that flatters her and embellished with a crinoline (millinery horsehair) bow and band. A pretty vintage button finishes the look. Everyday chic!

Style Monday

Well, we’re in the home stretch. The Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, May 3 and the hats, dresses and heels are in the starting gate and ready to run for the roses.

You know that the cloche is my favorite hat. This pretty Derby-goer knows how to pair it with a pretty floral dress, proving that a small hat can create a special look in a different way than its larger-brimmed sister. Fresh and pretty!

Barbara in her new hat

Barbara in her new hat

I recently had the pleasure of creating a hat for Barbara Feld, who retired last year as Executive Director of Tuesday Musical Association, an Akron institution that has been providing quality concerts and educational opportunities for young people since 1887. The hat was a retirement gift from Tuesday Musical’s Executive Board.
A certified hat lover, even the centerpieces at Barbara’s retirement party were beautifully decorated cakes in the shape of hats. When she came to my studio we knew that a custom design was in order to commemorate this milestone. As we talked, I pulled out special trims and buttons…and eventually created this pretty hat with vintage ribbon that I customized with the addition of black trim, and a fabulous vintage button that ties the design together in all the right ways. Congratulations, Barbara!

Mad Hatter Event Photo

The Mad Hatter event last weekend was a lot of fun, but we’re only halfway through the event! It also runs this Friday (March 15) and Saturday (March 16), from 10 – 4 each day. There are still lots of pretty hats to enjoy – buy one, get one half off and buy 2 get one free on select styles. This customer went away with some gorgeous winter hats and she looks stunning in them!

Lakewood Arts Festival this Saturday, August 4

If you’re in the Lakewood area this Saturday, I hope you’re able to stop by the Lakewood Arts Festival between 10 am and 6 pm. Although it’s my first time doing this show, I’ve had a lot of people – both artists and art-lovers – tell me it’s one of their favorites. This pretty knotted straw cloche has been one of my best-selling hats this summer – I will bring it with me on Saturday…you can find me in booth 13.

Embracing the Color Green

A customer recently asked me to create a custom straw cloche to wear this summer. She’s currently in love with the color green (and as a strawberry blonde, she looks great in it!) and wanted a piece she could wear with a lot of different things. It’s funny…so many people shy away from green but it’s a great neutral, especially for the summer. The grass is green, leaves are green, and flowers are every color. See? It goes with everything! Here’s a pic of the hat. It’s fun, fresh feel makes me smile.
